What does it mean for a number to be the "solution" to an equation?

"Solution" is something which makes the equation true!! Left hand side = right hand side.

e.g. 2x + 1 = 5 x = 2 Now if we replace 2, we will get: 2(2) + 1 =5 5 = 5 So 5 is the solution.
