The Empire State Building reaches one thousand two hundred fifty feet at the top floor. Keira has a model of this landmark building that is 8 inches tall. What is the scale between the model and the actual building?

A scale is simply a ratio, i.e comparison between the perceived and the real. its written as (perceived) : (real) 8 inches is the perceived height yet the real height is 1250 feet, so the scale (ratio) of the two becomes: 8 :1250 however you have to simplify it to as much as possible so that on one side you have 1 or a unit, usually on the perceived side of the ratio, so to get one you divide both sides of the ratio by 8: hence: 8 :1250 becomes; 8/8 :1250/8 which reduces to 1 : 156.25
