Minor chat suggestion. If I scroll up to read old messages, I'd like for the auto-scroll to stop.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Omg me too!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It makes sense for the chat to scroll itself when you're at the bottom of the chat reading the newest messages. However, if I'm looking at old messages, trying to find something, auto-scroll should stop. Naturally, I don't know how hard that would be to implement, but it seems doable to me...

OpenStudy (mattfeury):

Yea this is kind of annoying, and it used to not be the case, but unfortunately there's not really an easy fix at the moment. As new chats come in, the old ones get pushed up. We could not push new chats when you're scrolled, but then scrolling back down becomes a nightmare. Chat is kinda wonky just due to the sheer number of them coming down.

OpenStudy (mattfeury):

Don't really have a great way to make this happen, but agreed it is annoying so I'll marinate on it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Glad to hear you recognize it's frustrating. Like I said, it's a minor issue. If you come up with a good fix for it, that would be sweet. It's not huge though.

"We could not push new chats when you're scrolled, but then scrolling back down becomes a nightmare." Is this the main reason for not doing it? Is it really that bad? I haven't experienced it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess I can see a situation where I scroll up, forget about it, and when I come back there's a mile and a half of chats to scroll through.

OpenStudy (mattfeury):

You haven't experienced that because it was a hypothetical solution. to be clear, what do you mean by auto-scroll: 1) The chats continuously get bumped up as new chats come in or 2) Anytime a new chat comes in, you are brought back to the absolute bottom to see the new chat. It should be (1), and (2) should definitely not be the case, but I just wanted to make sure.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Hugely frustrating, definitely agree. I've been meaning to figure out how we can deal with this. It's a complicated interaction between the autoscroll, some performance optimizations that don't display all the chats that we have loaded, and a couple of other things.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Matt, when I say auto-scroll, I mean 1, which is how the chat currently works. I've never seen it do 2, and thank goodness. That sounds horrible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But actually now that I think about it, I did experience a site whose chat did 2. If you wanted to read an old message, you had to scroll up and HOPE that nobody said anything new. Lol. God that was bad.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyhow, good to hear this is something you fellas are thinkin' about.

OpenStudy (mattfeury):

This should be fixed now :). When you are scrolled up, your scroll position should not change as new chats come in.

^ dis guy

<3 You're the man.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I noticed it sort of scrolls up and then quickly corrects itself back to where you had it scrolled.
