I was a bit confused on detente but according to merriam webster it is: the relaxation of strained relations or tensions (as between nations); also : a policy promoting this So to me it's between A and D, but D doesn't really make much sense. Hopefully someone else can add some imput...

It is C. For one the Cuban Missile Crisis effectively INCREASED tension between both sides of the Cold War, thereby creating the opposite of a detente. And secondly, the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in 1962, before the period of detente which was during the Nixon Presidency.
