Does Openstudy accept donations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi @Romero - at this point, we don't, but thanks! We are "technically" a for-profit company (though we don't actually make any money). Thanks so much for thinking of us though! And don't worry, there will be ways to support OpenStudy coming up right around the corner ;)

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

out of curiosity, i heard openstudy receives grants. what are the qualifications of a donor before openstudy will receive the grant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, we've *received* grants from the Gates Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, and through the NGLC. For NGLC, we need to reach certain benchmarks - basically showing that OpenStudy does in fact help students, is something that can reach/affect a lot of people, institutions like it, etc. In terms of qualifications of a donor? Not sure what you mean exactly - I assume you mean what WE have to do to earn a grant, correct?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no i mean you said you dont accept donations..well grants are in some ways donations...so what do those donors do for you to accept their grants? i mean does the grant need to come from an official establishment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gotcha - I get what you're saying now. Short answer is yes, a grant is a very different proposition than a 'donation.' A grant is a sum of money usually given by a government or some other institution for a particular purpose - in our case education. So, it comes with responsibilities. Also, grants are usually given to companies as a way to get them off the ground - they are not meant to continue indefinitely. Donations are different obviously - it's basically charity to do with what you will. We'd prefer to give real value to our users as opposed to asking them for money ;)

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

oh i see. thanks for the detailed response.

Hehe, no worries - it's what I do ;)
