A 6 foot tall man is standing near a treat on level ground as shown in the picture. if the man's shadow 4ft long, how many feet tall is the tree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

treat is suppose to be tree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to use portion for this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

proportion*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it shows a picture of a tree that is 18feet and a mans shadow is 4ft tall.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the tree's height is 18feet? or is the tree's shadow 18 feet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it just shows a picture of a man and his shadow that is 4ft long the tree's shadow is 18ft long

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 18 ft long for the tree's shadow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6/x:4/18 x=27

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to learn more about proportion. basically, you find the ratio and apply it to the one you want to find.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if that makes any sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YEAH but im not sure how you're getting 27 are you multiplying or dividing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I'll just rewrite the equation to make it easier for you x/6:18/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

better? Take away the ratio sign so it becomes x/6=18/4 x=18/4(6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok it makes sense now
