I would like to bring a point to the moderators view. Around 10:00am to 11:04am there isn't a moderator to be found. This morning math chat went absolutely insane. There were a lot of things being discussed that shouldn't, people were trash talking one another, people were bypassing the filter. In short I think there needs to be at least one or two extra moderators on around the times I had said earlier. I know the times seem like it's really short. But too much happens in an hour and 4 minutes. Here is the link to the various solutions to this post http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/50082f4fe4b020a2b3bd7c74
I kinda concur. I mean, I understand you guys can't babysit chat and people are going to do what people want to do, but it does get quite out of hand at times.
There is a distribution of mods who live in various time zones so that we avoid this problem, but apparently it's not working well enough. What time zone are you in?
EDT
well admin will have to find another mod I guess to fill that spot. They'll get to it when they read this post I'm sure.
Very well. I mean I understand the various moderators in different time zones. but what I saw this morning just enraged me. I couldn't even focus on my question because I was trying to fix math chat myself.
It's Like math chat NEEDS a babysitter.
No..It DOES need one.
I like our current mods D: haha But maybe just like Ledah said, 1 or 2 people that will be able to keep an eye on chat or whatever. They don't need to be all gestapo or anything, just have to let it be known that people are being watched. Also, @Ledah I think a normal user trying to fix math chat actually causes more trouble.
It takes one person to make a difference @rebeccaskell94 :D
So far I haven't had a problem stopping things like that from breaking out.
I will say that ... why more mods .. ? @Ledah if i am right then they are 2-3 users who are doing that all .. why not to just report them ? or warn them ... i think becca is right ... normal users cant make any diff. into it .. only mods can stop them
@mathslover Everyone in math chat decided to start going crazy.
if they are still online then ledah report them the mods will have a look to it also please keep a proof of it next time .. so that u can answer the mods ..
Wooh ..gr8 teamwork by openstudy abusers ... I am impressed :D
And the chat moved too fast for me to report everyone.
Just one report per abuser if possible is enough hopefully. Just make it clear in the report what they are doing. Of course, you still have to wait for someone to read their email before anything can be done, so it doesn't solve the problem immediately, which is what we really want.
I couldn't even hit the report button on one of them. I remember names if that's fine enough for you guys.
I can't do anything with a username, but I'm pretty sure admin can. but when they are on you can see their name and scroll down to find them on the list of users who are online on the right of the screen and report them, can't you? (I forgot if you can report users from their profile pic, sorry...)
I'll try now
Won't be able to report them from profile pictures.
Then I think that should be an option we should add, and I would like to suggest it to admin. Thanks for pointing this out Ledah :)
Not a problem...
Remember. The admins have allowed reporting pictures/usernames/profile content too. Go to any of their content, and start with - "This report is specifically for his/her picture/username........." and continue it.
I actually didn't know abt that ...thanks parthy ... I was going to ask it now :)
It's been a lot of time. The admins added @Callisto. We still need a bigger team to manage.
instead of appointing more mods ... cant we appoint some of the duties to responsible ambassadors ?
I *think* that there used to be a report button on the profile, but they removed it due to spams.
Also, any mod who is a fan of you can be sent a pm about it.
I've had the experience of owning a chat group of my own while I was in high school. nobody ever quit on me. and @mathslover they won't listen to you either.
@mathslover I had talked to an admin about this. The 'troll' was ignoring the ambassadors. They don't listen to the unofficial authority.
Trust me becca tried. and she didn't get results
Hahah .. there is no one in the world ... who dont listen to a mathslover. . .. :D .. jk Well i am pretty sure that there names are -xy i know about them surely ... They are very common trollers
common --> famous trollers
maybe we should just restrict the ability to report people "as a bad user" from their profile pic to ambassadors or some other trusted group.
Facebook has a report option that is pretty well. It has limited choices to choose from; but, I wouldn't like that one here.
and don't worry Ledah I'm sure you'll get your chance as an abassador ;)
The thing I like about Facebook report is that it has the 'Report Picture' option.
Yes that is what i am requesting for ...Apointing more moderators will give admins / old mods a huge duty to look on whole site and then managing that all .. and hence i will say that ... We must have some duties more for ambassadors ..
^Sounds good to me
Of course! Ledah's the man!
^ hope the same for admins nd other mods ^ ... @TuringTest sir can u let admin ( colm sir ) know about this ?
I mean about this discussion to admins ?
I would love to take up being an amby but, alas I don't wish to be an amby.
Thanks for the heads up! I am just about to post something.
I'm no sir! lol don't worry, admin will read this. but if by some miracle they don't of course I'll bring it to their attention
I'll keep doing what I do
:d good spirit ledah .. thanks @TuringTest ... I hope for the best for this site ..
that's why we love you guys :)
vice versa here : " thats why we love the mods here "
Okay I'll respond because I was brought up. 1. @mathslover my point was not that 1 person won't make a difference but that when there is a chat full of people, someone like Ledah (or I) or anyone else who is genuinely trying to help usually had adverse affects and the people on chat basically "turn" on them, so to speak. 1 person absolutely can make a difference but it's best to use prudence when deciding to go against the crowd. 2. Ambassadors can do nothing but be a presence that people often dismiss. Please do no think that because I have a purple A someone is going to listen to me anymore than they would any other user. 3. I do indeed, love our mods.
Becca's point is well thought out.
I am just gonna be honest if I was a troll, I wouldn't listen to anyone of you. Simply because nothing actually happens or is done/taken care of. I don't think the problem is whether anyone is around to stop it. The problem is how one goes about stopping the problem. Which obviously is not being done well enough. Coming into chat and seeing that your presence has stopped an inappropriate discussion does not solve anything. The second you leave its chaos again. I don't have the intention of being rude, just making it aware how I and many other people view this topic.
Normally people have stopped if I've asked them to change the topic if they were getting out of control. And even when I stop chatting they continue on with a different topic like I've asked.
It's all about making a difference. it doesn't matter how much effort it takes.
-gets popcorn-
Do you really think asking them has made them decide to all of a sudden be nice to all the users and behave and be respectful? no. You can try to make a difference. I never said anything about trying. But you're not a mod. My point is people just come back and do it again later.
You know what. I'm not even going to argue. It's honestly pointless to argue with you. you haven't seen what I can do these past few days. so how can you be so sure of yourself?
*sigh* For the sake of good conversation I'll join in. Musicalrose does have a point, kids are going to do what kids want to do. However, I think that we should try to point them in the right direction and not merely let chat go to hell (sorry) because "they will never change". I have seen Ledah helping in chat and he has made a difference. Sometimes more than others and sometimes he's been completely ignored but other times I have literally seen him completely change chat around. Honestly, if people are really going to push boundaries I don't think it matters if they are being watched by a mod or not. In fact, some people troll when they know a mod is watching. Anyway, back the original problem my most simple summary would be: Chat needs to straighten up. Mods would work.
Not hat it matters...But I think Ledah would make an AWESOME Mod! :D
The alternative to appointing more mods is to get rid of the chat rooms. Plain and simple.
o_o Screw that. Ledah, sucks for you. You're not being a Mod! Not on your life. :P
Like a boss. Unfortunately, I think that is a major draw to this site so they likely wouldn't do that. It would solve most of the stupid problems on OS. Then we just have posts to deal with.
@blues I should highlight this related discussion on various solutions http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/50082f4fe4b020a2b3bd7c74
I do enjoy having the chat feautre btw, that was not my 2 cents into OpenStudy getting rid of it. It just sounds fiendishly pleasant at the moment.
Thank you Turing - you found the link I couldn't.
welcome.
*revision* Well I guess all that should be answered is what solution will work, and will it be better in the long run?
Well I think our options boil down to: 1. Get more mods 2. Suck it up 3. Have the mods that are currently here be slightly more proactive (this is in no way meant to belittle or minimize what you guys do, I know you do a lot) 4. Do that (weird) amby/other sub group of demi-mods
Even one more mod at those times would work.
Idk in my opinion the chat situation isnt that bad. It is smth that can be dealt with but it isnt a pressing matter. Whenever I have been on in the past few weeks math chat has been relatively quiet. But then again becca is on more often than I, so she wld know better
Well, it really isn't typically "that bad" but when it gets bad, it goes to hell in a hand basket. People start cussing and by-passing filters, they are utterly rude to each other (for no reason) they start fights and bicker over meaningless things etc etc It also has it's "bad moments" about twice a day. I have actually resorted to avoiding chat* more and more as time has gone on but I still watch it and when it gets bad enough I'll just nicely remind everyone to take a chill pill or remind them to watch their language or be respectful and if it's a user that knows better I just report them. *I am specifically referring to math chat.
See I've tried that too. Like reminding them about their behavior, but I can't do it alone. People do listen to me and try correcting themselves but there are those select few that just blow off what our experienced users would say. I know this site was meant for greatness but the way math chat runs itself is kind of bad.
Let's be buddies. xD
haha xD
Curious, on what your views are Matt and Colm..
They are meditating on it, Ledah. Shh :x
:O Sounds fun
i'd like to join in this long post as well. it seems fun. 1) i am usually online all day but i do not see this as well. it's quiet whenever i come to chat 2) the more you entertain the trolls the more they troll 3) stop trying to change them 4) just report them 5) if you talk to them they know someone's watching their "legact" so in a way you're just flattering them 6)that is basic human behaviour. you cant deny that fact.
