plz help 1/2-3/4x+2.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

There are no common terms. That means you must cross multiply. 2(4x + 3) 3(2) -------- (-) ------- 2 4x + 2 -------------------- Now factor: 8x + 6 and 6 8x + 6 6 ------- (-) ------ 2 4x + 2 Can you do the next step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then you cross out 8x and 4x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that becomes 2 on top and 1 on the bottom replacing where they were?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Look at: 8x + 6 ==> 4x + 2 Look at: 2 ==> 6 Do you see a divisible pattern?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Go ahead and give it a shot by cross dividing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

32x+12/12?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Good attempt, but you it wrong. Remember when you're trying to simplify fractions you always divide the bottom by the top. When dividing it should always be cross division. Meaning I do the opposite of cross multiplying. So let's take 8x + 6 and 4x + 2 8x + 6 6 ------- (-) ------- < ==== Now solve the top right: 2 4x + 2 8x -- = 2x 4x 6 -- = 3 2 Plugging it in: 2x + 3 6 ------- (-) ------- 2 1 <==== Out denominator canceled upon dividing. I put the 1 in order to keep it in fraction form. Now we solve for the denominator by: 6 -- = 3 2 This, 2x + 3 3 ------- (-) ------ 1 1 This becomes: 2x + 3 - 3, Can you take it from here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah I think so, so then once it becomes that thenI cross out 3 and 3? which beomes just 2x?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Yes, 3 - 3 = 0 You're left with 2x

OpenStudy (compassionate):

The last thing you do is subtract Steps are: > Look for factors: > Multiply/distribute > Cancel >Subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay one thing. my choices are x+2 and 2 which form shud it be in?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

x + 2

thank you ver very much :)
