1/y-2=2/y+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cross multiply: 2(y-2) = 1(y+1) can you proceed from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i know if it has an extraneous root

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do i put the 5 in place of the y's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you plug your solution back in for y only to find that it does not work. In this case it has an extraneous root.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For this problem, you will see that you arrive at 6 = 6. This is true, so there are no extraneous roots.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay :) Thanks for your help!

@qpHalcy0n how would you set up this question: 5/(2x+6) - 2= (1-8x)/4x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can split the right side up to look like: \[1/4x - 8x/4x = 1/4x - 2\] This should get you on the right track.
