11. Perform the indicated operation and, if possible, simplify. Please show all of your work. Write your final answer exactly as a fraction in lowest terms. 7/19+1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are you getting stuck on?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find common denominators

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Everything, it's so confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u know how to find common denominators

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(7/19)(2/2) + (1/2)(19/19) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is 4/19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^ how'd you get 4/19 o.0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

found common denominators which would be putting everything over 38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then 7 + 1 is 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then you simplify which gives you 4/19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the original equation, there is no way possible that you would get 4/19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're at 7/19 to begin with, the only way you would get 4/19 is if you subtracted

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand what you're saying but the direction say that she has to reduce it sooooo you would reduce it to 4/19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u think it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still there's no way you would reduce it to 4/19, you're at 7/19 to begin with, adding half.... roughly 9.5/19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's 33/38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's no way to reduce that, unless you use decimal points in the fractions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok whatever u say

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there answer options?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now I'm reallu confused!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the common denominator (bottom of the fraction), for both of the fractions, is 38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there any answer option jackie

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would like to see how u got this micki

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in order for you to make them have common denominators, you have to multiply the first one by 2/2, giving you 14/38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG WOW. i am sososo dumb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the 2nd fraction, 1/2, by 19/19, giving you 19/38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of courseee. I'm sorry i completely forgot to multiply the top

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hence it becomes 14/38+19/38

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok so you are say I multiply 2x19 and 2x7 giving me 19/38 +14/38 and 33/38 would be my answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks guys, it's been over 20 years since I have done this stuff lol
