If f(x) = (sin x)/x, what is the limit of the function as x approaches zero? why is it the answer is 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if x is in radians then the limit approaches 1 the value of sinx is nearly x when x is very very samll but not 0 hence the ratio tends to 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is 0/0 equal to one?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

no 0/0 is indeterminate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.0/0 is equal to infinity. It can be 1,2,3,4,5....anything..

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

- or undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no , 0 cannot divide any number

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

if you differentiate top and bottom you get cos x as x ---> 0 cosx ----> 1

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

- so by hopital's rule sin x / x has same limit
