If a plant cell is put in a beaker in such a conditions that : 1) the conc. of water in cell < the conc. of water in beaker Will the cell swells up ? shrinks ? or nothing happens to it ?
@Callisto please help me
@apoorvk @Diyadiya
Sorry, I haven't taken Biology for my senior secondary school...
:( .. do you know any1 who is good in biology ? @vishweshshrimali5
any help @apoorvk ?
Hmm. some thing to do with tonicity - since the cell has a higher concentration of the solute - (it's hypertonic), it will absorb water to become isotonic with its surroundings (ofcourse provided the cell-membrane is semi-permeable).
@mathslover The cell will swell. The given solution is a hypotonic solution in which the concentration of water is less in the cell than that outside. So the water will come into the cell through osmosis. So, the cell will swell.
Thanks @apoorvk
But .. the cell is PLANT CELL .. PLANT cell has CELL WALL .. Hence cell wall will not allow any1 to enter the cell right ? @vishweshshrimali5
Oh sorry : cell wall is semi permeable http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_the_cell_wall_fully_permeable
But in my book there are 2 questions given : if a cell is plant cell then what will happen and if the cell is animal cell then what will happen ? this means the answers will be diff.
actually that is not so....................... plant cell wall is a FULLY PERMEABLE MEMBRANE.............. according to my knowledge so it will allow even the flow of sugar inside the cell to outside and water from inside to outside........ animal plasma membrane is SEMI PERMEABLE MEMBRANE.................. so it will NOT allow the flow of sugar from inside to outside and will only permit the flow of water into the cell........ got that ?
Hmn but what about this ? But in my book there are 2 questions given : if a cell is plant cell then what will happen and if the cell is animal cell then what will happen ? this means the answers will be diff.
I have written the DIFF. answers in the last comment///
Oh sorry i got it now ..
np............
actually plants have cell walls made of cellulose outside the semi-permeable cell membrane, whereas animal cells only have the s/p cell-membrane.
Thanks @apoorvk ..
