OpenStudy (compassionate):

48÷2(9+3)

OpenStudy (theviper):

First solve brackets 48/2*12 24*12=??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve the brackets first..

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Go ahead. Solve. Let me know your answer.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

I'm well aware on how to solve this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really??

OpenStudy (compassionate):

I'm interested to hear your reasoning on the actual answer.

OpenStudy (theviper):

288

OpenStudy (compassionate):

I say: 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No 2 isn't..

OpenStudy (compassionate):

48 / 2*(9+3) = 48 / 2*(12) = 48 / 24 = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I want to share this thing..

OpenStudy (compassionate):

It's a paradox equation. Rather interesting. There are three possible answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In India we use BODMAS instead of PEMDAS.. see the difference..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See for the order of D and M there..

OpenStudy (compassionate):

I'm aware. It's a matter of giving multiplication or division priority

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, India and Pakistan they give priority to Division.. Because these are the countries which always divide people in name of religion, caste rich and poor etc etc.. But In other countries Multiplication wins over division..

OpenStudy (compassionate):

So if I give division priority (as per strictly following the order of BODMAS) after the brackets I get: 48 / 2*(9+3) = 48 / 2*(12) = 24*12 = 288 But if I give multiplication priority (which I'd never do): 48 / 2*(9+3) = 48 / 2*(12) = 48 / 24 = 2 Have I missed something here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In the two?? Nothing you missed..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiplication is never given priority, look at your question this way:|dw:1342989559246:dw|
