OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

is anybody good in statics here

OpenStudy (nali):

u should just type ur question

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

do u understand statics

OpenStudy (nali):

yes

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

ok her it is

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

thecolum for years is 1960, 1973, 1986, 1995, 2002, 2003 and the subway fares is 0.20, 0.40, 1.10, 1.30, 1.45, 1.90 I have found out this is an exponential model. Now here is the question? Using the best model, the projeced subway fare in the year 2013 is how much

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

do you undestand this question

OpenStudy (nali):

are this all the data?

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

yes

OpenStudy (nali):

u said that this is on an exponential function?

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

yes

OpenStudy (nali):

ok just give me a few minutes to write the answer

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

ok

OpenStudy (nali):

here is a very good toturial that can help u make an eqztion for ur data and then u could use that to answer ur question i will show the steps but just take a look at this and see if u understand it http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_table_of_values_can_be_an_exponential_function

OpenStudy (nali):

meant equation*

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

I get is but Can you still he lp me becuse I am a little confused

OpenStudy (nali):

ok where are u stuck

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

on how to get started

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

can you show mw once so I know how to do it

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

please

OpenStudy (nali):

ok

OpenStudy (nali):

are sure there are no missing info just check plz

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

I am positive. Here are the directions Use the Year/subway fare data shown. Let X Represent the year, with 1960 coded as 1, 1973 coded as 14, and so on. Let Y represent the Subway Fare. Does the model appear to be a good model. Using the best model, find the projeced subway fare in the year 2013.

OpenStudy (nali):

when it says "and so on" do u have a picture that u can draw to clarify some things

OpenStudy (nali):

because that is where the trick is

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

the R^2 or the coefficient of determination is .960

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

see yeah I know it is very tricky, do you undertand still

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

56 toxicsugar22 0thecolum for years is 1960, 1973, 1986, 1995, 2002, 2003 and the subway fares is 0.20, 0.40, 1.10, 1.30, 1.45, 1.90 I have found out this is an exponential model. Now here is the question? Using the best model, the projeced subway fare in the year 2013 is how much

OpenStudy (nali):

ok so how did find out about the R

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

by the TI 83 Graphing Calculator, do you have one

OpenStudy (nali):

yes

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

ok do you still not get how to do it

OpenStudy (nali):

ok then use it to find A

OpenStudy (nali):

just like the other website says

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

ok how would I do that, is it like .40/.20

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

can you please help me

OpenStudy (nali):

ok look i think i get it now subtitue the data that u have with 1,14,14,8,2 and then use the same y 0.20, 0.40, 1.10, 1.30, 1.45, 1.90 .20 = A(.960^1) and solve for A

OpenStudy (nali):

i will explain how i got the values of x

OpenStudy (nali):

but u can solve for A now and tell me what u get

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

I thinks I did it right I got right I got .20833

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

can you plaes make sure i did it right

OpenStudy (nali):

ok that is the same as i got but i think u have the wrong R

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

that is the corect R^2 .960

OpenStudy (nali):

what do u mean by R^2

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

u can make sure n your calculator

OpenStudy (nali):

so u mean R^2 = .960

OpenStudy (nali):

0.96

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

0k

OpenStudy (nali):

so that is ur R or R^2 iam confused

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

R^2

OpenStudy (phi):

I think you are supposed to do something like this http://cphs.dadeschools.net/departments/mathematics/ebooks/alg1mcd/Source/LA108GCD.pdf I don't have a graphing calculator. But hopefully this makes sense to you. I believe R is a measure of how good the fit is The data is not a perfect exponential, so you have to find the "best fit".

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

Nila are you still going to help me

OpenStudy (nali):

ohh u did not get it from phi

OpenStudy (phi):

btw, it is statistics not statics.

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

i did but that does not help me in finding the Projected fareway in 2013

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

will you please help eme furthur

OpenStudy (nali):

but after u find these things like r and A i can help u further can u plz do these steps and tell me the r and A and then it is easy to get 2013

OpenStudy (nali):

in this case they call it a and b so plz just find thoses and tell me

OpenStudy (nali):

meant those

OpenStudy (nali):

Did u get the answer?

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

I got A to be .208333 and R to be .96

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

I think

OpenStudy (nali):

ok y=Ar^x = .2083333(.96^x) y=2013 or 11 since the difference between 2013and 2003 plus 1 is 11 = .2083333(.96^11) = the answer

OpenStudy (nali):

did u get the answer?

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

i got 13296

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

is that right

OpenStudy (nali):

the numbers are right but it is supposed to be in decimal 0.132966

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

the projeced subway fare in the year 2013 is how .132966505

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

so that is it

OpenStudy (nali):

yeah do u have the answers with u to check

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

yes I do and how would I round the answer to the nerest cent

OpenStudy (nali):

so it is right

OpenStudy (phi):

doesn't the calculator give an A and a B? so the model would be A*B^t where t is years since 1959 B should be bigger than 1, because this graph should be growing. when you raise number less than 1 to a power, it gets smaller.

OpenStudy (nali):

yeah it does but we used the same equation from another site so it is the same thing but just deffernt letters we had A for a and R for b

OpenStudy (nali):

just round it like this 0.13 or 0.132

OpenStudy (nali):

@toxicsugar22

OpenStudy (phi):

Sanity check: do you think the price is going to be 13 cents.

OpenStudy (phi):

B is going to be about 1.05 or so. and A is about 0.20

OpenStudy (nali):

well the problem is that i don't have agraphing calculator so i just depend on her answers and i have no other way to check it

OpenStudy (phi):

and the price in 2013 is going to be about 3.11

OpenStudy (nali):

well how did U get that?

OpenStudy (phi):

I used matlab, and did a least squares fit to the log(price) But toxic has to do it with a calculator.

OpenStudy (phi):

mine is only ball park.

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

thanks phi and Nali

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

I appreciate it

OpenStudy (nali):

did u get the right answer in the end?

OpenStudy (toxicsugar22):

yes thanks

OpenStudy (nali):

ur welcome u r a very patient learner :)
