http://oi46.tinypic.com/10fqdll.jpg What is JH? median perpendicular bisector angle bisector altitude

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So this is a multiple choice question. Do you have definitions for each term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes,But im not sure which one is the answer,i think is altitude but im i correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's see. Why do you think altitude? What's it's definition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you look at the diagram, there is a gray box next to point 'H' signifying a right angle, so the line segment 'JH' forms a right angle with line segment 'CB'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A line segment representing 'altitude' must go through a vertex and form a right angle with one of the edges of the triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And, 'JH' can't be an 'altitude' because it originates at point J on line segment 'AB', not at a vertex.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh alright,Well Im not sure which one is the answer,Do you have an idea>?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do, you're close if you chose altitude because of the formation of the 90 degree, right angle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What other possibility requires the formation of a right angle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It has to be Perpendicular bisector then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah man! And it's really the apt term because perpendicular basically means 'forms a right angle'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can also see the tick marks on either side of 'H' on the line segment 'CB'. Those marks signify that 'CH' and 'HB' have the same length, that's what the perpendicular bisector does: it basically splits the line segment into 2 separate and equal length parts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 'H' is the midpoint of 'CB' too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah thanx @dpflan

No problem, good luck with the rest of your work
