A number is being written in scientific notation. The student moves the decimal point to the left 3 places and _____. a. multiplies by 10-3 b. multiplies by 3 c. multiplies by 10 d. multiplies by 103 i dont get this question either.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

x 10^2 -> move decimal place to the RIGHT two times x 10 -> move decimal place to the RIGHT one time x 10^-1 -> move decimal place to the LEFT one time x 10^-2 -> move decimal place to the LEFT two times does that help?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

that x means times

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiplies with 10^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.. i dont get it..

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

notice the pattern

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see 10.0cm = 0.10*10^2cm

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

if the exponent is negative you're moving decimal places to the left if the exponent is positive then you're moving decimal places to the right

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

first ask yourself. how many decimal places are you moving?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its simple multiply and divide number by 1000 thus (9999.0/1000)*1000 9.999*10^3 decimal is shifted to left by 3 points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jonathanbae here is a simple explanation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah i'm so confused..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think igsabel has written it reversly take a look at what i have done you will understand just multiply and divide such number with 1000 @jonathanbae

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get how to find the answer tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me step by step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look here suppose you have a number 9999.2 and you are supposed to shift decimal by 10^3 or 1000 now multiply and divide number by 1000 (9999.2/1000)*1000 now (9.9992)*= 9.9992*10^3 this means you need to shift decimal by 3 points left you multiply with 10^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jonathanbae

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh.. ok thankyou

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it?? :)
