help with newton's third law?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Newton's third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. therefore, if i push my friend, his equal and opposite reaction is him resisting it (inertia). If the force he exerts is equal to the force i exert, how come he moves? wouldn't the two forces cancel each other out?

i would suggest not to aply these laws in living object because living objects have there own forces you can not calculate or observe exactly. . .
