Why is it important to keep the verb tense consistent when writing
Well there is no real reason to shift from past tense to present tense, all it would do it get your readers confused. You really shouldn't change your tense unless you absolutely have to. Hope I helped! :)

so people will know you are still referring to the same timeframe
tenses tell you the time a verb happened. so if two tenses are the same, that means they happened at the same timeframe (i.e past, present or future)
