One thing you might have trouble at first is, that such a characteristic equation doesn't ring a bell because it is in a slightly camouflaged version of it's regular eye popping form. If you add +46 to both sides, you might obtain something you're more comfortable to work with.

umm you can try solving it by quadratic equation.. \[-b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac}/2a\] where a=1; b=-14; c=46
