How do I write this as a product of a linear factor? P(x)=x^4+5x^2-36?

OpenStudy (nottim):

Maybe...find the roots? Or change it into this format: (x-#)(x+#)- That's not the exact method, but I think that's what you're suppose to do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know the answer is (x-2)(x+2)(x+3i)(x-3i), I just don't understand how they are getting there?

OpenStudy (nottim):

well, the method's almost always important; some say its almost as important as the answer.

OpenStudy (nottim):

i's a constant right? for what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, I got it. I had to change the x^2 terms to y and solve from there. It just took a little while.

OpenStudy (nottim):

awesome. you didnt even need my 'help'. it just takes time and effort eh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, but thanks anyways.
