What does the absolute value sign mean? What does it do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that if you have an absolute value it turns the negative into positive for the x, but that is all....

OpenStudy (zepp):

So for |x|≥16, any number's value that's greater than 16 is x Therefore, x is greater or equal to 16 OR less of equal that -16
