...unions. That would be my guess. After WW2, the need for labor exploded as factories retooled themselves from making war materiel to things like cars which a peacetime public were eager to own. Unions also promoted better working conditions and expanded their power during this time as workers flooded into their ranks, soon guaranteeing things like job security and a promise from the companies to aid in cost of living expenses through wages. It was something that would ripple out throughout several industries making unions extremely appealing to new workers and helped to improve worker productivity across the board.
