Speciation, or changes in related organisms to the point where they are different enough to be considered separate species, is the reason why the offspring is infertile. The tiger and the lion are close enough in species to breed, but their young won't be able to breed or live very long because of speciation. Speciation occurs when populations of one species are separated and adapt to their new environment or conditions.
