One of the properties of cellulose is that it is not soluble in water. What would happen if cellulose was water-soluble? Plants would no longer be able to store carbohydrates as energy. Leaves would not be able to conduct photosynthesis. Cell walls of plants would no longer maintain their rigid form. Humans would not be able to use it as a source of fiber in their diets. @Carniel

OpenStudy (stephstar101):

Alright, so what happens when substances are water-soluble?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they dont dissolve in it i guess

OpenStudy (stephstar101):

Well, if it IS soluble, it will dissolve. So cellulose is a main part of a plant's structure, that's already a big hint. Imagine what would happen if cellulose was soluble...what would happen to the structure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would fall apart. i have no idea

OpenStudy (stephstar101):

Yeah! It would fall apart! So which one of those answers reflect what you just said?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C?

OpenStudy (stephstar101):

yes sir! you got it! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are an angel

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (animelover98):
