How are electricity and magnetism related?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

electricity and magnetism are related in that the magnetic force is merely the electric force in another inertial reference frame.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

related : you can't have one without the other. they are the basis of what we feel..taste,smell,see and do. they cause each other but north and south relates to magnet, and positive and negative relates to electicity.

Unless you've had some in-depth study of Electricity and Magnetism, it's hard to appreciate how intimately they are related -- the best you can probably do is to say that magnetism is a relativistic manifestation of electricity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they are both inter related, one is produced by the other

OpenStudy (fwizbang):

1) Both Electric and magnetic forces act on electrically charged particles. ( A charge has to be moving to experience the magnetic force.) 2) Moving electric charges(currents) produce magnetic fields. So , electric and magnetic fields are produced by the same set of sources. 3) Changing Electric Fields produce Magnetic fields. 4) Changing Magnetic fields produce electric fields. 5) At a deeper level, a purely electric field observed by one observer will be seen by an observer moving relative to the first to have a different magnitude and an additional magnetic field. A similar situation holds for purely magnetic fields. (It is not true that a magnetic field is an electric field seen in a different reference frame.)
