Two similar solids are shown below. What is the volume of the larger solid? 1750 ft3 1000 ft3 7000 ft3 3500 ft3

so i dont know how to calculate this problem...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AccessDenied can you help me out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dpaInc can you help me out? how to understand it?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

The problem doesn't give you the height or depth of the second block...but I assume it's meant to be the same height and depth as the first. In that case, you've doubled the length on the second block and therefore, doubled the volume.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

I guess it does say "similar solids"....which means the depth and height would be the same. So the answer would be that the volume is 875*2 (just doubled the original volume).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so multiplying by 2 is my best option?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let's just say the volume is of the fist block is \(\large V_1=l\cdot w \cdot h \) since the two solids are similar, and that the dimensions are doubled in the bigger prism, then the volume of the bigger prism is \(\large V_2=(2l)\cdot (2w) \cdot (2h)=8lwh=8\cdot A1 \)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i see thats the formula to the problem right?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

@dpaInc: I think the only dimension doubled in the picture is the length.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dimensions are doubled in order to stay similar...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, ALL the dimensions have to be doubled...

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Looking at the image again, which isn't really to scale, I guess I can agree that it's meaning all the dimensions were doubled. So the volume would be 8 times the other volume.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

I just read it differently initially.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah,, i did the same...:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i got to multiply 8 to 875?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

No worries :) @Ghostman2152:Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the answer is 8x875=7000

OpenStudy (shane_b):

** GOLD STAR **

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks B-) but i still dont get the part of getting the 8 times?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

You see that the side shown went from 5 to 10 ft right? So it doubled...and so did the other dimensions (depth and height). Look at @dpaInc's first response to see how that affected the formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok. . . thanks i understand now B-)

OpenStudy (shane_b):

:)
