What is the most important key to an effective essay?
You want to have an interesting introduction, a thesis statement that encaptures all of ideas that you want to discuss, at least 2 body paragraphs elaborating on ideas in your thesis with proof and examples, and a concluding paragraph reiterating your thesis while relating it to life/stronger themes.
pathos, logos, and ethos will also help in this.
If you have any control over what you are writing, then having a topic you want to write about is of certain value, or why it is important to you--in that you will be more likely to take more interest in it from the beginning. 1. Open with a great topic sentence and from there develop your first intro paragraph around what you will be talking about, what you will prove (if anything), what you will show the reader, why it is important for them to know or why it is important to you to show them, what they will experience, what you will conclude for them. 2. Remember to open with a topic sentence for each paragraph with taking up from where the last one left off; and an end with a transitional sentence moving you to your next paragraph. 3. End with a conclusion, with an intro sentence that could say something like, "In summation," or "In conclusion," or something that lets the reader know they are at the last paragraph or ending of your paper. Hope this helps. It is easy if you map it out as Intro, body, Ending. Make your notes accordingly and fill in your gaps and you should be good to go! :)
Start early- The biggest mistake in essay writing has nothing to do with writing skills. It is starting the project too late to do a good job. It’s easy to fall into the trap of procrastination with an essay assignment. It’s a big job and often it’s difficult to know where to begin. Also, the due date may be several weeks away, so there is no urgency in making it a priority. Divide and Conquer- The essay is the ultimate divide- and- conquer application. Because the essay can be a large and intimidating task, you must cut the big job into a series of smaller tasks that are easy to start and manage. You may want to break it down into pages (write one page a day), or sections (write the introduction in one day, the first paragraph of the body in one day) in order to achieve your final goal of a completed essay. Make time for rewriting- Make sure you set aside time to edit and revise your essay. It is best to write a first draft quickly and then put it away for a few days. Then, come bacto it and begin the task of editing and rewriting. Setting aside time to rewrite your essay can dramatically improve your grade and is one of the most important steps in writing an essay.
