In a multiple-choice test, each question has four options. Students will get 4 points for each correct answer; lose 1 point for each incorrect answer; and receive no points for unanswered questions. A student does not know the correct answer for one question. Is it to her advantage or disadvantage to guess an answer?

Parth (parthkohli):

This is a mind-play. The probability of getting the question right is less than \(1 \over 2\), right? So, it wouldn't be right to guess a question because the odds go against you.

I thought that too. Its a 1/4 possiblity I would get it right. A 3/4 possiblity I would get it wrong and loose a point. so yes, guessing would be a bad idea. Am i understanding that correctly????
