Ricardo and Kim rowed their canoes from their base camp to a fishing camp. They rowed a distance of x miles upstream on one river, (3x2 - 9) miles downstream on another river, and (2x + 9) miles across a calm lake. Which expression is equivalent to the total distance, in miles, Ricardo and Kim rowed their canoes?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Add up the three expressions and tell me what you get

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You add them up because they want the total (or sum)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3x^2+2x)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

close

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the +9 and -9 add to 0, so that's correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but x+2x is not 2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x is squared and 2x and 3x squared are not ike terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so u cant add them

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

look at the first x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and add this to the 2x in 2x+9
