Why is land so important in China?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Quite a bit of China is mountainous terrain unsuitable for large cities or for building farms to feed over 1.3 billion people. River plains and valleys are considered a premium for both, concentrating the population into most of those areas such as in the eastern half of the country. The further you move in the other directions, the land becomes less able to support farms and large numbers of people thanks to the mountains, rocky plains, deserts, and harsh altitudes that make it tough.

Land is so important because when the land use is changed it directly affects the country’s capacity to generate sufficient food supplies. And i mean it happens all the time with natural disasters, agricultural retructuring, and infrastructure expansion all leads to food deficits. Thus affecting other circumstances limiting trade and everything else. And on top of that you have to consider population. http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Admin/INF/OPT/Summer99/gerhard_heilig2.htm
