In an election, where there are only two candidates, one who gets 43% of the votes is rejected by a majority of 420 votes. THe total number of cotes polled is : A) 1470 B) 1380 C) 1790 D) 3000
Because you only have two candidates, you know the other one must have got 57%. The difference between the two was 14% which is equal to the "majority of 420 votes". So you know that 420 votes = 14%, which is the same as 420/x = 14/100. Solving for x (or just doing 420/0.14) gives you the total number of votes. D) 3000
