Communism is theoretically the shared ownership by everyone of the means of production so environmental sustainability would depend on the community attitude to it. An agrarian society like China might value it - a society seeking to rapidly industrialise like the young Soviet Union would have, and did, ignore the environmental cost of industrialisation. Whole areas of marginal land were destroyed in the haste to industrialise the production of food. Lake Baikal is now disappearing as a result,
