(sorry, i didnt realize that i was missing the rest of the poem. but here it is.) There came pneumonia and grippe, stalking among them, seeking for weakened constitutions; there was the annual harvest of those whom tuberculosis had been dragging down. There came cruel, cold, and biting winds, and blizzards of snow, all testing relentlessly for failing muscles and impoverished blood. Sooner or later came the day when the unfit one did not report for work; and then, with no time lost in waiting, and no inquiries or regrets, there was a chance for a new hand. (Excerpt from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair) While both excerpts use imagery to enhance their meanings, only poetry uses carefully chosen words. correct punctuation. descriptions of the action. form and a pattern of rhyme.

@tayirene: Well think about this logically. The questions states that ONLY poetry uses . . . and lists some things. Of those things what is the one that ONLY poetry uses?

im sorry, thats the wrong question for that passage. the correct question is: The main idea of the excerpt is even though the workers had jobs they got sick. people are susceptible to horrible diseases at all times. that winter is a hard time for trees and machinery. that employers do not care if their workers sicken and die.
