irrational or rational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{5/8}\]

OpenStudy (turingtest):

can you simplify \[\sqrt8\]?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yess

OpenStudy (turingtest):

ok, what does it simplify to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2..4?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

no

OpenStudy (turingtest):

\[\sqrt8=\sqrt{2\times2\times2}=2\sqrt2\]so at this point we know that \(\sqrt8\) is irrational because \(\sqrt2\) is irrational and cannot be reduced to find out if the whole thing is rational or not we need to see if we can cancel the \(\sqrt2\) in the numerator can we?
