What does this quote mean? I can't comprehend.

While reading the person's account/recollections of the events can be illuminating and inspiring...I think there is merit in the idea that if you've lived through it then you can truly understand and fathom it.
Ask a woman who has experienced childbirth...she'd probably say if you haven't actually experienced it yourself...you have no idea or concept of what it's actually like.
