Hal cuts a piece of cardboard in the shape shown below. He plans to cut another piece of cardboard in the same shape. The length of the sides AB and DC of the new piece of cardboard are made four times the original dimensions, and the length of the side AD is tripled. What is the area of the new cardboard piece?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The area of any trapezoid is A = h(b1+b2)/2 We're quadrupling the bases and tripling the height, so... A = h(b1+b2)/2 A' = (3h)(4b1+4b2)/2 A' = (3h)(4(b1+b2))/2 A' = 12h(b1+b2)/2 A' = 12*A Note: A is the original area and A' is the new area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 12 time the area of the original cardboard?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A' = 12*A translates to New area = 12 times original area
