The traditional way of figuring out what species are closely related to other species is to look for morphological similarities (and differences). This method was used in Darwin's time. You basically have to look at the skulls (other parts of the body too, but skulls work well here) and look at which ones have the most in common with human skulls. If you do this, you'll find that gorillas and chimps have certain human-like features. A modern technique is to compare DNA. As it turns out, humans and chimps are very close genetically.
