x^2 + 3x – 54 = 0

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

do you need to solve it..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its a quadratic equation

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... find the factors of -54 that add to 3..... the larger factor is positive and the smaller is negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 and -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@campbell_st ??

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

close 9 - 4 = 5 and 9 x -4 = -36

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

9 is the larger factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 and -6

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

thats it so the factored form of the equation is (x - 6)(x + 9) = 0 can you solve it from here...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nooo!! @campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... so once its factorised..... you need to solve each part of brackets x - 6 = 0 and x + 9 =0 this is because is either expression in brackets is equal to zero the whole equation is equal to zero... try and solve the 2 equations...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer will be 6 and -9

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

correct.... of you substitute either value into the equation you will get 0 as the answer
