There might be an algebraic method or formula for this that I'm not aware of. I just thought about it for a bit and visualized a way to find the answer. I'm not sure there is a unique solution, but one way to do it would be to put two square-based pyramids base to base. The resulting shape has eight faces, and twelve edges. By my count, there are six vertices.
