(a-c)/(x-a)=m, solve for x

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

(a-c) = m(x-a) a-c = mx - ma a-c+ma = mx (a-c+am)/m = x (a/m-c/m+(am/m)) = x a/m-c/m+a = x (a-c)/m + a = x

can you help me with this one: Write an equation to solve- two buses leave Houston at the same time and travel in opposite directions. One bus averages 55mi/h and the other bus averages 45mi/h. When will they be 400 mi apart?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

eif they leave from the same spot... this is distence = rate*time problem. so we want 55*t + 45*t = 400 notice the first two terms are r*t so we know the final answer will be distence. t(55+45) = 400 t(100) = 400 t = 400/100 = 4
