"I claim the 5th." Instructions: You've heard it stated, "I Decline to Testify on the Basis of My Fifth Amendment Right!" Write a paragraph that explains the meaning of this statement. Also, state under what kind of circumstances might this statement be made and why? (this will take a little internet searching. Use "key word--Fifth Amendment--as a starting point.)
The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides, "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
I didn't explain the meaning, so if you want to plea the fifth, basically you don't want to talk because you don't have too. If you read the amendment it will help with your explanation.
