An essay doesn't HAVE to be any number of paragraphs. There just has to be enough to get your point across.

That said, most high school teachers and college instructors want at least 5: introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Usually, the essay is an intro(to start it all off and what your essay is going to be about), 3 body paragraph(stating main points and rephrasing your intro), then the conclusion(to sum up everything)

grade school, high school and post-secondary level (college) use a typical structure, and that structure contains the following:
minimum of 500-words
a paragraph for introduction, which MUST contain the THESIS of the essay;

a paragraph of for closing statement, or summary;
