Sorry, afk for a minute there. But looking at my notes from number theory/cryptography, The euclidean algorithm was just about the first thing we did. Another thing we looked at was primitive pythagorean triplets.

Number theory it is a branch of pure mathematics devoted primarily to the study of the integers. Number theorists study prime numbers as well as the properties of objects made out of integers (like rational numbers) or defined as generalizations of the integers (like algebraic integers).

For people not getting a degree in cryptography but still interested in it, they're almost the exact same thing.

no cryptography is study of breaking codes and the biggest problem of number theory is riemann hypothesis that is riemann zeta function dealing with distribution of prime numbers
