Parking in a student lot costs $2.00 for the first half hour and $1.50 for each hour thereafter. A partial hour is charged as a full hour. What is the longest time a student can park in this lot for $7.00.

would it be 4 hours

OpenStudy (kainui):

You can make this an equation, since you have to pay 2 for the first half hour and then 1.5 for each hour afterwards, so we can write P=1.5(t-.5)+2 where the price is dependant upon the time, but remember the time starts only after half an hour, so that's why it's t-.5. Now plug in the price of 7 and solve for t to find how much time.

wont it be 3.5
