(a-5)(a-2)=28

OpenStudy (callisto):

1. expand the factors. (a-5)(a-2)=28 a(a-2) -5(a-2) = 28 a^2 - 2a - 5a +10 = 28 a^2 - 7a + 10 = 28 2. subtract 28 from both sides a^2 - 7a + 10 - 28 = 28 -28 a^2 - 7a - 18 = 0 3. factor the expression a^2 - 7a - 18 = 0 a^2 +2a - 9a - 18 = 0 <- can you try to factor this first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so .. . it would be a^2 -7a-18

OpenStudy (callisto):

Not really, you need to take out common factor to expand it. I split the middle term into two so that you can do the factorization easier by taking out the common factors

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still dont get it .

OpenStudy (callisto):

Hmm.. let me try a little for you.. a^2 +2a - 9a - 18 = 0 For the first two terms, take out a as the common factor. a(a+2) - 9a - 18 = 0 Can you try to factor the last two terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind, found the answer .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for trying though :)

OpenStudy (callisto):

I.. think you need to learn how to do it... *sigh* Welcome though..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried and i finally got down to this . ( a-9)(a+2) so a could equal to 9 or -2

OpenStudy (callisto):

Yes!!!!

:D
