The enlightenment created a period of new free and liberal political views that outcasted feudalisms and empires as bad and evil. Even though kings still ruled they embraced more liberal policies such as a parliement or senate serving the people. This gave the colonists the ideals that if the king wouldnt grant them these policies then they would rebel and make their own union. Based soley on liberty, freedom and democracy the beat out the imperial ideals that were pressing them. Thus you get america.
