20x^2+31x-7?? too confusing, explain how to work it please?

OpenStudy (ghazi):

use \[D= (-b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac})/2a\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agreed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm not solving for D though? it's factoring trinomials so that doesn't make sense to solve for D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the question is: "factor 20^2+31x-7"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (ghazi):

\[D= (-31\pm \sqrt{7172})/40\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

unless you want to bust out fractions we're not factoring this one.

OpenStudy (ghazi):

@eseidl agreed

OpenStudy (amistre64):

err... they are using the quadratic formula to define the roots; the factorization then is just: (x-r1)(x-r2)
