The vector sum of forces acting on a body is the zero vector. A consequence of this is that the sum of the forces in any direction (x,y,z or any other direction) must be 0.

This is newton's second law:\[\Sigma F = ma\] where the acceleration is equal to zero So, \[\Sigma F = 0\]
