Solve |2y - 2| = 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Split it into two equations and solve for y. \[|2y - 2| = 15 \implies\]\[2y - 2 = 15 ~~~~~~or~~~~~~2y - 2 = -15\]Can you solve for y in both equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 and -13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How so? Her's what the first one looks like. \[2y - 2 = 15\]\[2y = 17\]\[y = 17/2~or~8.5\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you do the second equation though now that you see how to do the first one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i got negative 13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you have to do what? \[2y = -13\]\[y = ?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first step would be to add 2 to both sides to make \[2y-2=-15\] into \[2y=-13\] but that is \(2y\) and not \(y\) one more step
