A baby mouse weighs approximately 0.0022 pounds at birth. Write this weight in scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 x 10^-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^^^ not quite... scientific notation is the product of a number between 1 and 10 (exclusive) multiplied by a power of 10: \(\large a \times 10^{n} \), where 1 <= a < 10, and n integer.

now im confused

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Your original value is 0.0022 and it has 2 significant digits: "22". Converting it to scientific notation you would keep the two significant figures...but the first digit to the left of the decimal MUST be from 1 to 10. So in this case, you could shift the decimal place 3 places to the right and get: \[2.2x10^{-3}\]
